Raven's Pass is a small village on the southern edge of the Red Thicket. The village was established as a layover location for merchant caravans heading to and from Threshold. As such, it is frequented by caravans from Phandalin, Kirkilston, and Eastdale.
Over time, it became home to a few hardy souls who support themselves by logging the giant red and white birch trees of the Thicket Wood. The village has no means of defense and is merely a small collection of homesteads, stables, and a tavern called The Mason's Apron. Although there is a statue devoted to St. Ygg in Raven's Pass, only a single young acolyte is stationed in the village. The Red Laws are (at best) loosely observed.
Raven’s Pass: Settlement Overview
Raven’s Pass is a small, rugged settlement nestled within a narrow mountain corridor in the Northern Reaches. The town occupies a strategic location along a winding mountain path, serving as both a waypoint for travelers and a hub for local craftsmen and traders. Its population is modest, likely numbering around 500 residents, including families of artisans, traders, and a small contingent of militia tasked with guarding the pass.

Layout and Structures
- Main Thoroughfare: A rocky, uneven road runs through the center of town, connecting the entrance from the lowland approaches to the deeper mountain paths. Buildings cluster along this route, generally constructed from local stone and timber, giving them a sturdy, functional appearance.
- Blacksmiths and Craft Shops: The most prominent is The Broken Hilt, a stout stone-and-timber blacksmith with an open forge, stacked firewood, and tools visible from the road. Its proprietor, Samuel Armstrong, is a middle-aged, broad-shouldered craftsman with a stern expression, known for producing high-quality specialty equipment. Other craftsmen include carpenters, leatherworkers, and armorers, all working in practical, workmanlike spaces.
- Residences: Small, functional homes of stone and wood line side paths and terraces along the mountain slopes. Most have steep roofs to shed snow, small hearths for warmth, and gardens or pens for livestock.
- Public and Communal Buildings: A modest tavern or inn offers meals and shelter for travelers, often doubling as a meeting place for locals. There may be a watchtower or small guard hall overseeing the pass, hinting at its strategic importance.
- Storage and Workshops: Barrels, crates, and firewood stacks are common near homes and shops. Open-air work areas and small sheds indicate active trade and production.
Surroundings and Environment
Raven’s Pass is defined by its mountainous terrain:
- Topography: Steep cliffs rise around the settlement, with dense pine forests clinging to the slopes. Fog or mist often drifts through the valley, and narrow trails lead further into the mountains.
- Climate: The pass experiences cold, wind-swept weather, with frequent rain and snow depending on the season. This has shaped the rugged, practical architecture of the town.
- Strategic Location: The pass itself is a chokepoint; the town’s position allows it to monitor and control access through the mountains, making it important for both trade and defense.
Atmosphere and Mood
Life in Raven’s Pass is practical, hard-won, and self-reliant. The settlement has a gritty, frontier-like charm. Its residents are hardy, accustomed to harsh weather and isolation, and value craftsmanship, skill, and resilience. The town exudes a sense of timelessness, as though it has endured generations of travelers, traders, and mountain hardships.
- Daily Life: Work dominates daily routines—smithing, crafting, trade, maintenance of roads and defenses, and tending small gardens or animals. Markets are small but functional, with goods coming from both the surrounding mountains and lowland trade routes.
- Safety and Security: Despite its modest militia, the settlement is alert to mountain threats—bandits, wild animals, and unstable weather.
