Asmodeus
King of Hell
Lord of the Ninth
Lawful Evil
Symbol: A seven-pointed star

Asmodeus is a lawful, ancient, calculating, tyrannical deity who is associated with contracts, domination, pride, temptation, and infernal hierarchy.

He is the ruler of Nessus, the ninth and deepest layer of Hell. He is not just a powerful fiend but the organizing intelligence behind the entire infernal order. Devils under him are bound by rank, law, obligation, fear, and ambition. Unlike chaotic demons, Asmodeus represents evil through control, hierarchy, legalism, corruption, and perfectly worded bargains.

His most important themes are:

Lawful evil authority. Asmodeus is the tyrant who makes oppression look orderly. His evil is not random cruelty; it is systematized, codified, and justified through “law.”

Contracts and temptation. He rarely needs to force mortals into damnation. He offers power, revenge, security, forbidden knowledge, or survival, then binds the soul through a bargain whose hidden cost becomes clear too late.

Pride and cosmic ambition. Asmodeus believes he is the only being capable of imposing true order on creation. He sees himself not as a villain but as the necessary ruler who understands reality better than gods or mortals.

Infernal religion. Cults of Asmodeus are usually not sloppy murder-cults. They are secret societies, corrupt legal orders, noble houses, tyrannical churches, oath-bound cabals, or ambitious magicians. His worshipers may present themselves as defenders of civilization, law, tradition, purity, or “necessary discipline.”

Asmodeus isn't a cackling devil, but as a calm, regal, terrifyingly reasonable figure. He should sound like someone who always has the moral high ground prepared in advance:

“I did not make them betray their oaths. I merely gave their oaths consequences.”

His symbols vary by setting, but common imagery includes a ruby rod, serpents, horned crowns, black-and-red infernal stars, contracts, pentagrams or heptagrams, and regal infernal sigils.

Asmodeus is a distant patron or ultimate power, not an ordinary monster. His agents might be judges, inquisitors, corrupt nobles, diabolists, contract-devils, warlocks, or “reformers” who promise stability in exchange for obedience. A low-level party may never meet him, but they can feel his influence through contracts, cult cells, infernal legal codes, and temptations that seem practical rather than obviously evil.

The use of Hellbane is often associated with Asmodeus' followers.
